WAXLESS SKIS WILL BE BEST FOR TOMORROW, but if you don’t have them, read about wax below…
Location: Garipay Time: 3:30-4:30 Technique: Classic Kick Wax Recommendation: Swix special red/red or purple Upcoming Race: NA Notes:
- There is likelihood of a snow day tomorrow. If there is a snow day, WE WILL NOT HAVE PRACTICE. This is a regular policy for FS. If there IS school, but we have to cancel practice, it will be posted at local schools and on this site by noon.
- Coaches will be on hand to help with kick wax tomorrow since it is the first day for classic skiing and the conditions will make waxing challenging. If you DO know how to wax skis, please arrive with skis waxed and perhaps look around to see who you might help out in the parking lot!:)
- We will NOT have snacks tomorrow as the weather forecast is nasty. We will let you know when we will do snacks again. Rain and cookies don’t go very well together!
- Our groups will meet tomorrow on the RIGHT as you drive in to Garipay. As you look at the ski area, look for our colored signs to the right along Reservoir road (across from mini coop). We are going to try to ski and play with the younger one-day kids before practice.
- Mike Silverman from Dartmouth will be present at GARIPAY at practice time tomorrow to pass out Dartmouth ski passes for families who have purchased them. He will be at GARIPAY from 3:15-4:45 – bring check if you have not purchased a pass yet.
- If you are still interested in joining our gang of Ford Sayre families for some skiing at Mt St Anne (north of Quebec) after Christmas for some awesome skiing, we just received an email from a family from Putney Ski Club that still has room in a house they are renting that is RIGHT on the trails. The letter is below. As it is, there are 17 families heading up on Dec 27! Join in the fun!
Thanks and hoping to see you all tomorrow! Think snow!

From Mark Tarmy, Putney:
We are renting a house at Chalet Montmorency: www.chaletsmontmorency.com/en/accommodations/chalet_rental_at_mont_ste_anne_1765_en.htm It is in a prime location in Chalet Morency’s main compound and is on the edge of the ski trails sort of across the street from the swimming pool. It has 6 Bedrooms but we only rent five so the kids have a place to bunk. It was previously rented by the Caldwells & The Gordons and we have recently been taking it on. Everyone is on their own for breakfast/ pack lunch/ and we share a dinner (all though that’s not necessary if you are doing other things). We have the house rented from the 26th of Dec through January 1st–( 8 Days & 7 Nights) The price for the full week is $800.per family/room. If you want to do it on a daily basis it is $150.00 per night. Currently there are three families signed up: (Tarmys, 2 adults & 1 9y ear girl)(Bells, 2 adults & 2 Girls 8 &10)(Estrins, 1 Adult, 1 10 year old Boy). If you have any interest please contact Mark or Camilla at 802-387-4450 as soon as possible. We are doing this on a first come first served basis with preference given to people committing to the week. We are also contacting the EMBKL & CSU folks.
All the best,
Mark Tarmy
- Snacks Next Tuesday – We’d Love Your Help! December 5, 2014
Happy Friday and cross your fingers for snow this weekend!
Please take a look at the note below from Tracy Zuckerman and Jane Phipps – Goddesses of Good Things to Eat:
Thank you all for such a wonderful celebration before Thanksgiving. The kids were most appreciative and everyone enjoyed staying afterwards.
On Tuesday, 12/9, after practice, we’ll have snacks again! The hope is to have a joint celebration with the 1 day program (we will try to coordinate our practice location but if we aren’t in the same place, the 2&3 day-ers will still enjoy snacks wherever they may be). We will again provide hot cocoa & lemonade and are asking for food contributions from families – homemade or store-bought. Last time we had enough food (but hardly any leftovers!) so please let us know if you can bring something (e-mail Tracy Zuckerman at tracyzuckerman@comcast.net)
. This will be the last one for this year so we hope that you can join us!
You may drop-off your contribution at 3:30pm or bring it to the party.
Thanks,

Tracy Zuckerman & Jane Phipps - Practice Plan: Thursday, December 4, 2014 December 3, 2014
Notes:
- What an amazing sight to see all 200 kids, ages 5-13, out there on the “snow” yesterday! There was some seriously good mojo out there. Thanks to all for being so careful in the parking lot!
- It is great when kids arrive at practice on time. Our coaches head out promptly in an effort to keep kids warm and use the hour effectively. If your child arrives late, there is no guarantee we will be able to help him/her find his/her group, though we always do our best!
- On really cold days, it is helpful to have kids arrive with an extra, warm layer – parka, puff jacket- on top of their regular ski outfit. This will help them stay warm until practice starts.
- For families new to skiing, take a look at the waxing information below today’s grid from Jay Davis.
- We will have a lost and found box for the program this year. It will generally be on the porch at the Oak Hill cabin (or in the back of Ashley’s car). If your child forgets something, s/he can look in the box. We prefer not to have our coaches be responsible for kids’ clothing, so coaches will place anything they find in the lost and found box.
- Don’t forget to keep track of the kilometers you are skiing this season! Go to this link to learn about our Ski for K’s program and download the tracking form. This motivates some skiers and doesn’t make a difference to others. Do what works for your child. https://www.fordsayre.org/nordic/bkl/nordic-ski-for-ks/
- Garipay is the location for tomorrow. Again, if Fullington Field looks great in the morning, we may change our location. Please check the website in the morning. We will post no later than 7am. It will be skate skiing regardless.
Location: Garipay Time: 3:30-4:30 Technique: skating Wax Recommendation: CH8 glide wax Upcoming Race: NA Wax info from Jay:
Hello all,
As we begin the season, a quick word on waxing. There is a wealth of information about waxing on the FS website (along with a whole lot of other useful information), enough to satisfy even the most inquisitive mind.
https://www.fordsayre.org/nordic/bkl/waxing/
My very quick overview targeted to new families is as follows, using some of the info from the website:
1. Classic skis (that aren`t no-wax with scales on the bottom) need kick wax in the middle of the ski , from the back of the binding to several inches in front of the binding, to provide “kick” when the skier takes a stride and pushes off against the snow. Glide wax on the tip and tail of the ski then provides more glide than if the base is ”dry.”2. Skate skis need glide wax along the entire bottom of the ski to provide a smooth surface upon which the skier glides from side to side.3. While glide wax is a wonderful thing (both for speed AND importantly for protection of the base) for classic and skate skiing, it is not something that needs to happen before every practice. The more you do it the better, but it is not essential and in the reality of family life usually not happen on a daily basis. (Doing just your skis all winter and not your kids’ will be a good way to try and keep up with them.)4. We will have recommendations for kick wax (critical if your child is not using no-wax skis and it is a classic day) and for glide wax (not critical, but very good to learn eventually) on the website each evening before practice.
5. The critical component is showing up with skis, boots and poles, and a sense of humor and excitement to ski. (Oh, and a hat. 🙂 Too many kids did not have hats on yesterday and it was cold!)
Let it snow, and please do check out the website and then ask your lead coaches questions. We are here to help and to try and make your transition to the ski world as welcoming as possible.
