This is an archive of emails for the BKL 2 and 3 Day program for the 2015-2016 season and earlier.
- Practice Plan for Tuesday, 1-20-15 January 19, 2015
Information for the 2&3 Day Program:
Location: Garipay Fields Time: 3:30-4:30 Technique: Skate Wax Recommendation: glide wax Upcoming Race: Mansfield Duathlon (at Craftsbury) this Sunday. Go here for up-to-date event information. Or here to register through SkiReg.org (Parents, there’s a masters class for you, too!) Notes:
- Well, well… Not the optimal conditions for ski practice, but we can still pull it off! And there will be delicious SNACKS at the end, so all is well on the BKL ski front.
- PLEASE NOTE that we will make a final call on location tomorrow morning by 9am. We will send out an email, but as always, you can also find the information on our website.
- This weekend there are many events happening. We will support skiers who want to race in the Mansfield Nordic BKL Duathlon. Note that the race will be held at Craftsbury. A duathlon means you ski one half on skate skis, then quickly change skis and ski the next half on classic skis. It is a blast! See the links above for information and registration. We will have a club race organization google doc ready by Thursday so you can plan the timing of your trip. Kids can also attend the Eastern Mass BKL Sprints in Weston, MA, on Sunday, although our coaches will not be there. All skiers female! Note that the Annual New England Women’s Ski Day is being held on Sunday at Rikert. This is a fabulous event for girls and women. We recommend checking it out.
- Snacks for All on Tuesday, Jan 20th! January 16, 2015
Information for 2 & 3 Day skiers:
Thanks to Jane Phipps and Tracy Zuckerman for organizing our snacks this season. Please see their note below:
We hope to have an integrated 1 & 2 day program snack celebration this Tuesday, 1/20 after practice. There will be hot cocoa and yummy treats, so plan to stick around for a bit and enjoy.
Please bring something to share (homemade or store-bought). Let us know if you can bring something – we have over 100 kids in the 2 day program! Please e-mail Tracy. She can be reached at: tracyzuckerman@comcast.net
You may drop-off your contribution at 3:30pm or bring it to the party.
All of this depends on snow conditions, so stay tuned! If the snow at Garipay won’t accommodate 200 skiers on Tuesday, and we end up practicing at Oak Hill, we will still have snacks, but will do it with only the 2 Day program.
Thanks,

Tracy Zuckerman & Jane Phipps - Plan for Friday Skiers 1-16-15 January 15, 2015
Get psyched to practice all sorts of starts tomorrow: classic, sprint and mass, and learn what to think about in the first 1/2 km of a race. See you tomorrow!
Location: Oak Hill Time: 3:30-4:30 Technique: classic Wax Recommendation: Extra blue (if you can, iron in a colder blue or green; add one coat of Extra blue) Upcoming Race: No supported race this weekend - Practice Plan for Thursday, 1-15-15 January 14, 2015
Location: Oak Hill Time: 3:30-4:30 Technique: classic Wax Recommendation: Extra Blue/V40, 3 layers corked in Upcoming Race: No supported race this weekend Notes:
- So great to see everyone out there on Tuesday on good snow! Despite the cold temps, there were smiles all around. Thanks for working with your children to have them dress appropriately. Hurrah for toe warmers, buffs and mittens!
- Equipment: Please clearly mark your skis and poles with your skiers’ names. Colored duct tape with a name works well for easy ID. Also, we strongly recommend ski straps for both keeping track of and protecting your skis before and after practice. Mark those with your name as well and ask your child to put her skis back in the strap at the end of practice. It’s a great habit to start early.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0017I1TAE/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new - On classic skis, it is important to know where your child’s “kick zone” is. This is where you apply kick wax to the skis. Having the right wax in the right place makes a big difference in your child’s enjoyment on classic days. Finding the “kick zone” is easily done, as the following video demonstrates. When you do this, make sure the bottoms of the skis are clean, and the floor is as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z76IXy5W-I0)
- When waxing with hard wax, “crayon” the wax on the kick zone (trying not to leave big chunks or globs), then use a cork to “cork it in” and repeat this three times. It is helpful to do this before practice if possible, but we are there to help at practice if you need it!
- For more wax advice, we have help listed on our waxing tab on our site. Since most of you use Swix wax, this site is really helpful, too.
- For those of you interested in seeing terrific nordic racing online, this website is remarkably good, with full coverage of every international race and informed commentary in English http://www.crosscountryski.us. Thanks to Jay Davis for pointing it out!
Cheers and see you tomorrow!
Ashley and Peter
