- Plan for Friday Skiers 1-16-15 January 15, 2015Get psyched to practice all sorts of starts tomorrow: classic, sprint and mass, and learn what to think about in the first 1/2 km of a race. See you tomorrow!
Location: Oak Hill Time: 3:30-4:30 Technique: classic Wax Recommendation: Extra blue (if you can, iron in a colder blue or green; add one coat of Extra blue) Upcoming Race: No supported race this weekend - Practice Plan for Thursday, 1-15-15 January 14, 2015
Location: Oak Hill Time: 3:30-4:30 Technique: classic Wax Recommendation: Extra Blue/V40, 3 layers corked in Upcoming Race: No supported race this weekend Notes:
- So great to see everyone out there on Tuesday on good snow! Despite the cold temps, there were smiles all around. Thanks for working with your children to have them dress appropriately. Hurrah for toe warmers, buffs and mittens!
- Equipment: Please clearly mark your skis and poles with your skiers’ names. Colored duct tape with a name works well for easy ID. Also, we strongly recommend ski straps for both keeping track of and protecting your skis before and after practice. Mark those with your name as well and ask your child to put her skis back in the strap at the end of practice. It’s a great habit to start early.

This is where you apply kick wax to the skis. Having the right wax in the right place makes a big difference in your child’s enjoyment on classic days. Finding the “kick zone” is easily done, as the following video demonstrates. When you do this, make sure the bottoms of the skis are clean, and the floor is as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z76IXy5W-I0)
- When waxing with hard wax, “crayon” the wax on the kick zone (trying not to leave big chunks or globs), then use a cork to “cork it in” and repeat this three times. It is helpful to do this before practice if possible, but we are there to help at practice if you need it!
- For more wax advice, we have help listed on our waxing tab on our site. Since most of you use Swix wax, this site is really helpful, too.
- For those of you interested in seeing terrific nordic racing online, this website is remarkably good, with full coverage of every international race and informed commentary in English http://www.crosscountryski.us. Thanks to Jay Davis for pointing it out!
Cheers and see you tomorrow!

- Masters Skiers (parents, that’s you!) Unite… January 14, 2015
See the below message about a new Wednesday evening gathering of adults on skinny skis with headlamps! It is a BLAST to ski at night with a light. Check it out…
Tonight, Wednesday January 14th
Headlamp ski at Garipay
5:30 pm
I will ski around next to the parking lot and folks can join me, then we will head out.
Ford Sayre Masters club is organizing this and we encourage any and all to join.
David Loney and David Lindahl are the point people for this.
We will meet every Wednesday when the conditions allow.I will be there early tonight, possibly even 4:30, if anyone wants to start early. I will be back at the parking area at 5:30 to meet you. David Lindahl will be arriving about 6:00, so if you come late plan on meeting at the lot at 6:00. We will ski until 7 and of course you can stay longer if you have a good battery.
See you this evening.
David Loney aka D LoPS I use a bike helmet with a lamp mounted on it. I got it from Omer and Bobs. If you go to Omer and Bobs to buy a lamp I recommend you get one with a battery on a long wire. You will want to keep your battery against your body to keep it warm. If a battery goes dead and is cold it will likely lose its ability to recharge.

Hello 1-day a week BKL families,
Tomorrow promises to be chilly, but we have snow and sunlight and are set to have fun!
Please remember, we consider the 1-day program as an introduction to skiing – and you should consider participation in all practices as optional. We love to see your children, but if you are concerned that they will be too cold tomorrow – we understand and will look forward to seeing your child on a warmer day!
Location: Garipay Field Time: 3:30-4:30 Technique: Classic Notes:
- DRESS APPROPRIATELY. Temps are predicted at 10 F. Warm kids are happy kids, so PLEASE send your children dressed in non-cotton layers and make sure they have dry, warm, non-cotton socks (e.g. SmartWool). Consider giving them toe warmers in their boots and hand warmers in their mittens, and you can put lotion on their faces to prevent them from getting chapped cheeks. We’ll have hot chocolate to warm them back up after practice, but please be on time for pick up at 4:30.
- DID YOUR CHILD GET HIS/HER BUFF? Now is the perfect time for your child to wear his or her new Ford Sayre buff!!! If your child has not yet received his or her buff, please pick it up from the box at the white table. … And, then put it on your child before practice (either around their neck – or their neck and head). (They are really versatile, warm, and useful!!!)
- VOLUNTEER! We need you! The Silver Fox Trot, our “home” race, is coming up on February 14, on Garipay Fields in Hanover. We often have over 200 kids as well as adults racing that day and we need all the volunteers we can get. If your child is racing, come help! If your child isn’t racing, come help and have your child watch. It is a great venue for spectators on and off skis. Go to this google form to sign up. Our goal is to get as many families participating as possible. And really, you don’t have to know anything about ski racing! You can volunteer to help with the BKL races (kids K-8th grades) or with the Eastern Cup Race at Oak Hill (ages 9th grade – masters).
