- A note from Heather Rowland, Food Table Guru for the Silver Fox BKL Race:
Hello All,
A tradition at the Silver Fox Trot is for our team to provide food and drinks for all of the participants to enjoy after their races. To make this happen, we’d love for all the families to contribute something and here’s the plan for an assortment of treats.
If your last name begins with:
A through H – please bring baked goods (muffins, cookies, breads, etc.). There will be no plates or utensils. If bringing breads or bar cookies, pre-cut would be preferable.
I through S – please bring drinks (juice, cider or water) and/or paper hot beverage cups to match. A large of cooler of water will be provided.
T through Z – please bring fruit (apples, sliced oranges, bananas, grapes etc).
If anyone would like to help with the food tables on the day of the race, please contact Heather Rowland at h_rowland@hotmail.com or call 603 277-9746. It would be good to have at least one adult there throughout the day to monitor the tables, clean up spills and to help with setup and cleanup. If 2-4 people volunteer, it should make it easy to rotate folks in and out and enable you to see your children race.
All contributions are greatly appreciated!!
See you at the Silver Fox Trot!
Heather Rowland

Hello 1-day a week BKL families!
A few announcements to share:
- 5:00 End of Practice: The days are getting longer and the snow is dreamy, so from here until the end of the season, our 1-day a week BKL skiers will practice from 3:30 until 5:00!
- SNOW and SNACKS! We are trying AGAIN! A combined 1 & 2 day program snack celebration is scheduled for this coming Tuesday, 2/10 after practice. There will be hot cocoa and yummy treats. We hope that you will bring food to share (homemade or store-bought) & join the festivities. We will have over 200 kids! Please e-mail me if you plan to contribute, or sign-up to bring something at: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0E4DADAF23A1FE3-bklsnack3/
- Costumes and crazy hats! Both programs will be skiing at Garipay on Tuesday and it should be a blast. To get psyched for the Silver Fox Trot races, we are inviting coaches and skiers to come clad in zany costumes and/or crazy hats. Crack open your costume box, pull out a tutu, your magician’s hat – whatever, and get ready for some fun!
- Join our Facebook community: We’ve posted a few pictures to the Ford Sayre Facebook page – and hope to add more after the coming practices. Check them out at: https://www.facebook.com/FordSayre
- Thanks to all of you who have volunteered some of your day on Saturday, February 14, to help with the Silver Fox Trot at Garipay fields. We appreciate your willingness to help. Unlike a soccer or a basketball game, ski races are major events and require months of planning and multitudes of volunteers. Please remember that we hope every family will can participate in the Silver Fox Trot in some fashion. Even if your child does not race, please reach out to Lou Bregou at lou@flume.net, our race director, and offer your help. Helping at the Silver Fox Trot is a fantastic way to see some fun skiing, the whole family can be on skis, and you can feel good about giving back.
- The Silver Fox Trot is coming soon – February 14th February 6, 2015
The Silver Fox Trot is our local Ford Sayre Bill Koch League race – designed specifically for kids up to 8th grade. It is scheduled for Saturday, February 14th at Garipay Fields in Hanover. While racing is not a focus of our 1-day a week program, I’d like to encourage our skiers to participate since many of them will think this is great fun!
The official information and registration for the Silver Fox Trot are located at: https://www.fordsayre.org/nordic/silver-fox-trot/bkl/
However, because many of our families are new to cross-country skiing, I wanted to share a few details that you should know:
- The race occurs in the same spot as our children practice, so they are familiar with the venue.
- Ford Sayre coaches will be available to support your child(ren) in the race – and will preview the race course with them, help your child at the starting area, and be present to cheer them on during the race. Next week I will send out an e-mail with more details.
- The Silver Fox Trot has several different age groups/categories:
- The Lollipop race (for our youngest skiers) is not timed, children do not receive places, and children usually receive a chocolate bar at the end. It is only 200 yards long – and is a FANTASTIC introduction to racing!
- The 1st/2nd grade age category is not timed, but children are ranked by their finish times. Their race is only 1 km! (This will seem quite short to many of our 1st/2nd graders).
- Skiers in grades 3 and higher will receive a time and a ranking. Distances increase by grade level. For more details, see: https://www.fordsayre.org/nordic/silver-fox-trot/bkl/
- The Silver Fox Trot is a Mass Start This means that a big group of kids all start at the same time.
- The Silver Fox Trot is a “classic” race for Lollipop skiers and for children in the 1st/ 2nd grade category. But, it is a “freestyle” race for skiers in the 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, and 7th/8th grade categories.
- This means that the older skiers can use any technique that they wish, and most will use the skating technique. All children in second grade or younger MUST use the classic technique (no skating is allowed in a classic race).
- Note: Our 1-day a week children have only been taught the “classic” technique. It is perfectly OK to use the classic technique in a freestyle race, but your child shouldn’t compare their race time or place to children who are skating since the techniques are so different.
If your child isn’t interested in participating, we’d still like to encourage them to come watch! And, if you are available, we’d love to have your help as a volunteer. Volunteers are involved in many different ways, so please contact Lou Bregou at silverfox@flume.net if you are interested.
