- Plan for Tuesday, January 5, 2016 January 4, 2016
INFORMATION FOR THE 2&3 DAY PROGRAM:
Location: Richmond Middle School Room 708 Time: 3:30-4:30 Technique: OPTIONAL gear/wax Q&A for parents and skiers with coaches present Wax Recommendation: NA Upcoming Event/Race: Sat, Jan 9: The Bogburn Classic – later this week we will let you know if it is on or not NOTES:
TOMORROW:
Our Head Coaches have been out testing a variety of ski locations and have concluded that it is unwise to hold practice tomorrow. The areas that still have snow have frozen up into what we lovingly call “boiler plate,” and the resultant ice crust is not safe for kids that are going to be generating some speed on their skis. (The One Day program will have practice, as they have mainly younger kids who will all be on no-wax skis, getting used to the feel on their feet in the little bit of tracks that are set there.)
Instead, glass-half-full, please feel free to take this unexpected opportunity to come meet your children’s coaches and ask questions about ski gear or waxing. This is fully OPTIONAL. We will meet at RMS in room 708. Please leave winter boots in the RMS entry way. From the main doors, go straight, then through a slight zig-zag in the hall, and look for the room on the right. Bring skis, poles, boots, whatever, and we can help you figure out what you don’t know. Some ideas:
- Pole strap check/adjustment (this is more important that you can imagine)
- Kick zone measurement (paper test)
- Ski/boot sizing check
- Waxing help
Please do NOT send you child unattended. This is a chance for parents and children to have questions answered. If you and your child cannot come/do not have questions, please make other arrangements after school tomorrow.
THURSDAY:
The forecast for Thursday is for warmer temps which would suggest that we might be able to get a good day of skiing on Garipay that day, so we will look forward to that possibility! Look for the plan in Wednesday’s post by 6pm.
FRIDAY:
This Friday marks the first day for our 3-Day program. If your 5th-8th grader is registered to ski 3 days each week, we will see them this Friday. Look for a post with details on Thursday evening.
NORDIC COMMITTEE MEETING:
Open to all. Thursday, January 7, at 7:00pm in the offices of Tuckerman Capital, bottom floor of the Mascoma Bank building on Main St, Hanover. Interested in the long-term health of our program? Come join us!
RACES:
While racing is not a choice all of our skiers make, we do encourage kids to give it a shot. Many kids discover that they love the experience and we work hard to focus on the process, not the results.
Our first race is supposed to be this Saturday. As you can imagine, the conditions are making it highly unlikely, but we will keep you posted. The Thursday before each race we always send an email/post describing our plan for the race, reminding folks to register kids, and asking folks to sign kids up on a Google doc racing list. Once you see the email, if your child is new to racing and wants to participate, please let his/her Lead Coach know or email Heidi and Jay, our Head Coaches, at headcoachbkl@fordsayre.org so we can make sure to support your child and your family through the racing process. If your child is not interested in racing, no worries. Just delete the email when you see it.
Cheers,
Ashley & Peter

INFORMATION FOR THE 1 DAY BKL PROGRAM:
Location: Garipay Fields (9 Reservoir Road, Hanover – Meet at East side of parking lot) Time: 3:30-4:30 Technique: Classic (No poles for children in grades K-1) Forecast: Teens to low 20s, with some wind. IMPORTANT NOTES FOR TUESDAY 1/5:
Change in location! Now that we have snow, please pay special attention to the “Location” of practice, as it may change by the week. Garipay Field now has enough snow to ski – and we’ll take advantage of every inch we can. Please be patient with us as we become familiar with a new check-in routine. K/1s will meet closest to the entrance, followed by 2nd grade, 3rd/4th grade, and 5th-8th grade.
No poles for Kindergarten – 1st grade! Younger children should leave their poles behind for our first on-snow practices. Why? Children tend to learn balance, coordination, and technique best when they aren’t hampered by their poles. We’ll let you know when they are ready for poles. (Note: Children in 2nd grade and higher should bring their poles.)
Label your equipment! Please put your name on all of your ski equipment. (I will have some duct tape and permanent markers at the K/1 table if you need to borrow some.)
VOLUNTEERS – WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Thank you to the enormous group of volunteers that are already making this program a success! As you know, our 1-day a week program is entirely volunteer run and staffed – and we would love to have your help! I’ve consolidated our volunteer sign-up forms for help with hot chocolate and sign-in/out, and you can access them here! If you want to join us out on the snow, please send me an e-mail at BKL.One.Day@FordSayre.org
REMINDERS:
Bathrooms: Please make sure that your child has gone to the bathroom before practice starts. If needed, there is a Port-a-pot at the South end of the Garipay parking lot.
Clothing: Time for waterproof outer layers (on top and bottom), mittens, hats, ski boots – and a buff or scarf if it is really cold. See our What to Wear When you Ski page for more information. (Please note, while we hate to turn away children, all children must be dressed appropriately for spending at least an hour outside.)
Sign-in: Please remember, all K/1 and 2nd grade students should be signed-in and out of practice by a parent. Children in 3rd or higher grades can sign themselves in, however our coaches still need a verbal or visual verification that their parent/guardian is present at sign-out.
Lost and Found: We will have a small lost and found bucket by the K/1 check-in area. Please place any lost items in this bucket, and search the bucket if you are missing something.
Practice starts promptly at 3:30! Our coaches plan to leave the check-in area by 3:30. While we will try to accommodate late children, we cannot guarantee that your child can participate in practice if they arrive after 3:30. Likewise, please be ready to pick up your child by 4:30! It makes many children uncomfortable to return from practice and not see their parents – and it prevents our volunteers from returning home to their own children.
ANY QUESTIONS ON PRACTICE OR EQUIPMENT??
Reach out to us! We’re here to field your questions and receive your comments. Let us know if we can help! Aricca, BKL.One.Day@fordsayre.org, Cell: (603) 715-7233

Hello Ford Sayre Folks,
We are sorry to have to cancel our Ford Sayre New Year’s Family Event (again) this year. While there is snow, it is not very groom-able, and our sources tell us that it is probably not worth skiing on.
We hope that some of you have found snow on which to play. We have been in Quebec skiing with more than 20 FS families on some incredible snow at Mt Ste Anne. We will post pictures in a few days. We send warm wishes for a happy New Year and look forward to seeing you all at our practice on Tuesday.
Cheers,
Ashley & Peter

We’re still planning on a fun afternoon with hot chocolate and candy canes. If your child is joining us today, please remember to send them in a jacket with a waterproof outer layer (as well as mittens and a hat)!
As always, please remember that practice is always optional. You know your child best – and if you think they want to stay warm and dry, we’ll look forward to seeing them in January.
Happy holidays!
