Location: Richmond Middle School Time: 3:30-4:30 Technique: dry land – wear sneakers and clothes for running outdoors Wax Recommendation: NA Upcoming Event/Race: N/A - Practice Cancelled Thursday 2-4-16 February 3, 2016
INFORMATION FOR THE 2&3 DAY PROGRAM:
TOMORROW:
Man! Mother Nature is giving us a run for our money! We have checked out various spots around Hanover, but the wet and ice are making things sketchy. Practice is cancelled for tomorrow. We hope you can find a way to be active with a friend or two.
BANQUET DATE:
We will celebrate our season at the Black Community Center on Monday, March 14, 5-7pm. Note that there is no school in the Dresden district that day, but we WILL have our banquet. Please save the date. More to come from Ursula Slate, Banquet Coordinator Extraordinaire, as the date approaches.
FUN FROM THE HEAD COACHES:
If you want to lift your ski spirits, take a look at the following:

Us Team doing Uptown Funk in their own inimitable style

French Biathlon team on 5 kilometer downhill with GoPro camera
And this from Jessie Diggins’ blog from the Tour de Ski (http://jessiediggins.com/tales-from-the-tour/).
I was so excited about this win because it not only proved to myself
that I am capable of skiing with the best in the World, but that every
little kid growing up in the US is, too. Because I’m not a special
person. I’m not the strongest, and I don’t have crazy raw speed or
talent. I don’t always make great tactical decisions, and my technique
has a long way to go. But I ski with a lot of heart, and I know how to
push my body as far as it will go, and then a little farther. I grew
up skiing in the Minnesota Youth Ski League club, and I raced with my
high school team in Stillwater. I didn’t do anything crazy or special,
just loved to ski with my friends. So if I can do it, you can, too!
And that’s the best message I can possibly send home…that it’s
possible for young skiers in the US to keep dreaming those impossibly
big dreams, because they’re coming true right now.
- Practice cancelled for 2/2/16 – 1-day a week program February 1, 2016
Dear 1-day a week BKL families,
I am sorry to say that we have decided to cancel practice for tomorrow, Tuesday, February 2nd.
Our late afternoon checks of Garipay Field leave us unconvinced that our full group of 145 kids and their coaches can ski at Garipay tomorrow, and the ground is so soggy that it even would be difficult to run around and play games in boots.
We encourage you to find a friend and try to find some snow. As of this afternoon, the Hanover golf course looks to have some snow patches big enough for a few skiers at a time. However, with a forecast for 40 degrees and sun, it is unclear what conditions anywhere will look like by Tuesday afternoon.
We are so sorry to have to cancel practice.

For 2&3 Day Program:
NOTES:
So sorry to say that Jay’s 5pm ski to check conditions at Garipay and Oak Hill left him unconvinced that our group of 100 kids and coaches can ski at either place tomorrow, so we have decided to cancel practice. HOWEVER, we encourage you to find a friend and go see for yourselves – as of Saturday, Greens in Lyme was good and Huntley Meadow in Norwich also had snow as of Sunday night. The Hanover golf course may even have patches big enough for a few skiers at a time. But with the sun tomorrow, it is unclear what conditions anywhere will look like for our entire group. Sorry to have to cancel, but let us know if you find a good spot!
PAINTBALL A BLAST:
Over 30 skiers showed up for the Paintball Biathlon this weekend! Go Ford Sayre! We would love to see photos if you have them. Go here to upload your photos of the day. They will then appear in an album linked on our site under “photos.”
COMMUNITY SKI EVENT:
The Harland Tiki Torch Ski is coming up! This is a wonderful family-friendly event with food, a bonfire, and trails lit with tiki torches. It’s free for kids under 12, too!
Check it out here:

TUESDAY NIGHT SKIING AT WHALEBACK:
While we were just notified that it is not happening this week because of warm temps, in the future, Whaleback will be offering night skiing once a week at the bottom of its alpine slopes on Tuesday nights from 7-9pm. Go here for more information. Again, although the site says tonight is on, we have been told it is not.
Cheers and think snow!

- Plan for Tuesday, 2/2/16: 1-day a week program February 1, 2016
INFORMATION FOR THE 1 DAY BKL PROGRAM:
Location: Garipay Fields (9 Reservoir Road, Hanover) Time: 3:30-4:30 Technique: Classic (K/1s can NOW bring poles) Forecast: High 30s. VERY THIN SNOW COVER…
We’re going to try to squeeze another day out of our remaining snow. Our coaches will work hard to find patches of snow that will allow us to practice nordic technique. If you have a kindergarten or first grade child, they are now welcome to bring their poles.
Note: I will send an e-mail tonight if we lose too much snow, and have to return to running around in boots/shoes.
OTHER IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:
- Thank you to those that brought treats to last week’s practice. They were thoroughly enjoyed by the children!
- Want to volunteer to help out? If you have a few minutes to spare at the beginning or end of practice, please help us with grade-level sign-in/out or hot chocolate. Sign-up to volunteer here!
- Ford Sayre Buffs: If your child is new to the nordic program and hasn’t yet received a buff, please stop by the K/1 table and get one (Fleece for K/1s; fabric for 2nd grade and higher)!
- Community ski event: The Harland Tiki Torch Ski is coming up – Saturday, February 13th! This is a wonderful family-friendly event with food, a bonfire, and trails lit with tiki torches. It’s free for kids under 12, too! Check it out here.
